NIHR Advanced and Doctoral Fellowships NOW OPEN

Advanced Fellowships
The NIHR Advanced Fellowship is a postdoctoral Fellowship aimed at anyone with a PhD who hasn’t yet been appointed to a professorial post. The Advanced Fellowship supports individuals undertaking research in any scientific discipline or sector that can demonstrate a contribution to improving health and/or care.

We recognise the importance of funding early career researchers to undertake postdoctoral research and so we are looking to expand the number of Advanced Fellowships that we fund.

We are also encouraging more applications from people undertaking research in areas of social care, public health, dementia and multiple long-term conditions (MLTC).

Researchers from any professional background are eligible to apply for Advanced Fellowships, whether clinical or non-clinical.

The closing date for applications is 18 January 2024.

Doctoral Fellowships
These awards are for individuals and their host organisations looking to submit an application to the Doctoral Fellowship.

The NIHR Doctoral Fellowship is a 3 year full-time award that supports individuals to undertake a PhD in an area of research with the NIHR’s Remit for Personal Awards. The fellowship may also be taken up on a part-time basis.

Clinical and practice applicants are able to include up to 20% clinical/practice time as part of the fellowship, to ensure the maintenance of their clinical/practice competence.

To be eligible for an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship you must:

  • Have completed a first degree (for non-clinical applicants).
  • Have completed any relevant pre-registration training (for clinical
    applicants).
  • Have a proposed host who is an HEI, NHS body, social care organisation, or other provider of health and/or care services.
  • Be intending to register for and complete a PhD.

The closing date for applications is 1 February 2024.
